League Of Super Evil board by SteveLeCouilliard League Of Super Evil board by SteveLeCouilliard
Because of the interest in my Ed, Edd n' Eddy storyboards recently, I decided to upload a portion of one of my League Of Super Evil boards. This is from the episode 'Doom Driver'.

Yes, in fact Voltar had a face back in an early version. It was decided that it would be too hard to animate his expressions, which is why they went back to the masked look. Also the photocopier at Nerdcorps is a thing of evil, which is why the panels are all crooked.

Steve

is this the face of voltar? I can rest in peace now...

voltar is very similar to eddy, I thinked he is a mutant with sharp teeth and creepy eyes, or an alien, like invader zim (they are TOO similars, dude), but he is totally normal!
well, no matter, I still love him :)

This was just the previous design or rather a simplified version. I believe he looks more like "Doktor Von Pantaloon". Look carefully.

I'm starting to think you obtain some kind of pleasure questioning everything I say :sniff: we are like friens/rivals, I think XD
but this is not a work made by a fan, is a direct storyboard from the study, done by an official artist, for me is very real, I don't care :happybounce:

I think Amy means von Pantaloons design is based on Voltars old story board design :)

don't break my bubble of happy dreams! T.T but voltar really look like voon, and Eddy (Ed Edd n Eddy) and invader zim.
I guess it will always be an enigma, but this is the closest thing there is to know the truth: P

Haha I actually agree on that since this version of Voltar was almost canon ;)

Voltar kinda looks like Eddy. Even has that bug-eyed look and the occasional habit of yelling. Glad they didn't give him a face in the final version; it would've been quite weird...

Still, we all are glad that you wanted and were able to share some of your story boards.

Ha, photocopier of evil. I wouldn't doubt it when you work for a company labeled, 'Nerdcorps.'.

Wow, you made some official boards for League of Super Evil? Must've been fun! I wish this image was in bigger resolution to look at the details!

Voltar really looks too much like a brat in this maskless design; I guess changing it to the current one was for the best. Then again, it also explains why he does still behave like a spoiled little kid even in his new vaguely alien-like look.

Well, don't take it as gospel. I don't even know what the current version looks like under that mask.

Man I love this show, I just wish it had more episodes or at least ones I can find on youtube. I'm glad though that Voltar got the full on mask otherwise I could never take him seriously, not that he's is to be taken seriously anyways but you know. I hope to see more episodes, along with storm hawks that has also been done by Nerdscorp.

It's really difficult to draw his expresions which is very funny because he's too expressive.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot to mention that I designed the Doom Mobile. I didn't like the design they gave me, so I made up my own. Same thing with the upgraded V-mobile later in the show.

"Yes, in fact Voltar had a face back in an early version. It was decided that it would be too hard to animate his expressions"

Huh, sounds like some studio had not any money to do it, because if it was the artist, they'd do it... I think

Animators get paid by the second of animation, not by how hard a scene is. Anything that makes their lives easier helps the production.

ah... true... Wait, I do have a question (for the man who's in the cartoon business)

Q: (ref. Johnny Test and My Gym Partners a Monkey) Is this also the reason why cartoons today look the way they do? The lack of money/lack of time?

Jonny Test is animated in Flash which is a vector-based computer program. Flash works best with 'cut-out' style characters. Traditionally animated shows like Dexter's Lab and The Powerpuff Girls paved the way for Flash with their hard-lined modern style, even though they were hand-drawn. My Gym Partner Is A Monkey is hand-drawn, but it follows the popular modern aesthetic.

I don't think it's really about simplicity so much as carrying on the tradition of Hannah-Barberra's TV cartoons. TV just doesn't have the budget of feature animation, so some things are simplified. This is true of live-action as well.

It's a bit of a shame (but hey, there's always Adventure Time! with Finn and Jake)
